Who ever thought being a senior could be so much fun?

Independent seniors are offered year round activities. We are an interfaith fellowship engaging active seniors in learning, cultural events, dining out, volunteering, book club, social games, exercise and more. It takes a senior to help a senior get more out of life. We feel that all seniors are interesting and have much to share with others.

SCND's mission states we are "an interfaith organization committed to empowering persons over 55 to experience social, health, and intellectual growth and to remain functional in their community."

Members' Opportunities

Our primary program is called "Adventures in Learning". Members form new friendships while enjoying many informative programs and other activities.

The Artreach program gives those members who wish to participate the opportunity to occasionally attend various cultural arts programs in the Metroplex.

SCND members volunteer with the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program through The Senior Source. They also enjoy helping other non-profit organizations. Some volunteer to tutor early elementary students in DISD.

A project we are very proud of is our Shepherd's Closet. Through this program and the generosity of our members, as well as Albertson's, we help clothe needy students at a local elementary school.

Another helpful program is Shepherd's Watch. If a member is sick or in the hospital, the members will call their watch list to make sure everyone is informed.

For those members who have no one to check on them, we have a Buddy System. Buddies call each other briefly on a daily basis to make sure each is okay. When we live alone, anything can happen, and it's good to have someone to count on.

An accomplished storyteller has formed an entertaining Storytelling troupe with several of our members. They have performed each year for various senior audiences, including our own.

Even though many of us have family members who live nearby, we find that the friendships we form at our Shepherd's Center are special. Seniors understand other seniors. We have similar life styles and interests. We speak the same language. We help each other through the hard times, and we celebrate the happy moments.

All in all, we're having a great time at SCND, and we hope you'll join us!
